VP2E

The Vertically Polarized 2 Element Antenna shows tremendous promise as a resonant monobander good for portable work. This was developed by HB9SL Silent Key. It has a circular radiation pattern and +3dB of gain in the opposite direction of the feed point (towards the longer element). Where it is fed has a 50Ω impedance so there is no transformer needed. The other perk of this antenna is the very low deployment height of ~14' for the 20m version pictured here. Even with a small tree or a compact fishing rod mast, this antenna could be easily deployed for POTA operations or camping and the like. There are no radials to trip over and you get all the perks of a vertical antenna take off angle.

This chart from DD5LP gives the dimensions for making this antenna for other bands. This is truly best depolyed as a monoband antenna. For multi-band performance with a tuner, our recommendation is to go instead with a random wire.

Fellow ham John VA3KOT has an after action report about his experience with the VP2E on his blog.
